"Running the gauntlet of shopkeepers in traditional markets abroad, is a daunting and pulse-increasing experience for tourists, familiar with fixed prices and labels at home. One day, I sat down in an alleyway in the Khan-al-Khalili souk in Cairo to take in the action.

If there was a laboratory to see the mixture of worried looks on tourists, observe the actions of vendors to close a sale and witness the prize arts of negotiating and customer-care, this was it.

Perhaps all tourists should have a course in haggling on before they leave the UK. It brings together everything about presentation, active listening, conflict resolution  and assertiveness.
